LaKarian Angel Pettway

LaKarian Angel Pettway is a fifth-generation quilter from Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and comes from the renowned Mooney family of quilters. Her quilting lineage includes her great-grandmother Lottie Mooney, whose work was featured in the 2006 USPS Quilts of Gee’s Bend stamp collection, as well as her grandmother Ms. Tanzy Mooney, and her mother Ms. Emma Mooney Pettway.

LaKarian began learning to quilt at age fifteen by watching her mother and helping prepare quilting needles. Over time, she began stitching quilts herself and developed a creative style influenced by tradition but guided by her free-spirited approach. Her favorite patterns include Lazy Gal and Housetop quilts.

She now lives in Hueytown, Alabama, and works at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a community health educator. She earned her master’s degree in public health and continues quilting as a way to preserve her family’s legacy. She has also partnered with her mother through their Etsy platform, Emma’s Lovely Treasures.
