Kristin Pettway

Kristin Shauntel Pettway is a fourth-generation Gee’s Bend Quilter. Her great-grandmother, Delia Bennett; grandmother, Georgianna Pettway; mother, Pleasant Scott; and aunt, Stella Mae Pettway, are all Gee’s Bend Quilters. Quilts have been part of Kristin’s life for as long as she can remember, inspiring her to continue sewing and carry the legacy forward.

Kristin finds beauty everywhere—in songs, flowers, music, and the world around her. Music is especially important to her, and she is a pianist herself. She makes quilts as a way to express how she is feeling and how she believes cloth should come together. Rather than being drawn to a particular color, Kristin is most inspired by the patterns in the fabric.

For Kristin, one of the most meaningful parts of quiltmaking is being able to show people who she is without having to say much. Though naturally quiet, she expresses much of herself through her work. As she puts it, “I’m here. I’m just quiet.”

Kristin is a 2026 Maker nominee for SoulGrown’s Soul of the South Awards.
