Cathy M. Mooney
Ms. Cathy M. Mooney was raised in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and now lives in Birmingham. After high school, she moved to Birmingham and attended Miles College. While building her life and career, she drifted away from sewing, but frequent visits home reignited her passion as she watched her mother and sisters quilting together.
Ms. Cathy credits her mother, Ms. Tanzy Mooney, as her greatest teacher and inspiration. Quilting remains a meaningful way for her to stay connected to her family’s history and the traditions of Gee’s Bend.
She comes from a celebrated quilting lineage, including her grandmother Lottie Mooney, whose work was featured in the 2006 USPS Quilts of Gee’s Bend stamp collection. She continues the legacy alongside her sisters, Ms. Emma Mooney Pettway and Ms. Polly Mooney Middleton.
